Tokyo13: Artist Highlight (Triston Dimery)

Name: Triston Dimery
Current location: Denver, CO.

1.how long have you been doing art?
Illustration since I was younger. I started my first, hand painted clothing line Untouchable Clothing in 2005 while in High School. Painting portrait for two years, and graphics three months.

2.what got you into art?
My art is the only thing I can fully control. It allows me to process my thoughts, and bring them to life. Sort of like a portrait of the inner working of the mind.

3.what inspires you to create?
A lot of my work is centered around music lyrics, and cultural context. I like to take something normally deemed as a negative, and transcend a positive outlook upon it.

4.what's the last show you were apart of?
A showcase for my clothing company L.A.M.E. Clothing Project at Slice in Atlanta, GA.

5.how do you feel about the business side of art?
I feel like business makes the world go round. Everything is a business, including art. The value of one's creativity is up to them to manage and exploit as they choose. Being that I do not want my art to be criticized, and analyzed, the only pieces I show are centered around business. Two examples of this are with my clothing company, and interactive marketing firm.

6. Do you listen to music when you create?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Music, the lyrics, are my biggest influence. Many times I won't listen to music while I'm doing a specific piece, if it is based on a single work. I don't want to pollute my mind with other interferences. For general projects I put on a low volume mix on.

7.what's a new medium you want to try, and why?
I want to learn to embrace all my artistic talents, instead of attempting to put a label on my work for marketing purposes. I have always wanted to learn more about jewelry design.

8. Is there any artist you want work with, why?
I will be honest, I don't know much about the world of art. It is just something I have a natural talent for.

9. What's the greatest challenge you face being an artist?
My greatest challenge as an artist is getting into a productive mode, without over exercising my creative muscle. I don't have many original ideas, I feed off my surroundings, so finding inspiration and making a new identity for it can be a struggle.

10.what are you doing with your art?
I am launching my first business venture, L.A.M.E. Clothing Project in January. I am doing a great deal of prep work for that now. Also starting an interactive marketing company, IMME Branding Originality, assisting firms, artist and individuals, with branding and marketing materials.

11.what are your goals as an art?
I want my art to help people express themselves, and make them look as professional as possible.

12. Did you go to school for art, off so do you feel it helped you?
No, I recently graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a B.A. in Business Administration dual concentration in supply chain management and marketing. I am naturally creative, so I used college as the discipline to balance out my creativity, with profitability.

13. Any last words?

Dawn

This was a commissioned piece for a client who is moving into her own place and wanted some artwork to give life to her space, this is what I came up with. The name of the piece is called Dawn because of the saying "It's always darkest before dawn." It just shows that no matter how grey the clouds get and dark the sky is there is still hope and light, sometimes its in your face and sometimes you have to look for it.

Arise from the ashes

I drew this on the train for a client who wanted a piece of my artwork for a tattoo, her suggestion was a phoenix coming up out of ashes with flowers. First I most say I have mixed feelings when someone ask me to draw a tattoo concept fort them, because after working in a tattoo shop you learn the business and art side of it, most folks dont understand what is and isnt tattooable, I draw with the thought of sleeves or large piece.
